A mobile phone is a small transmitting device. The phone needs to share radio-signals with the nearest cellular station for you to hear an interlocutor. It is natural that the further the station is from a phone the louder it has to “cry” to increase the power of the transmitted signal.

If you clasp the phone to your ear you thereby put it in immediate proximity to your brain.
